My husband Joe and I went to marriage counseling for a little over two years. It saved us.

We’d been married about eighteen years at the time. Our five kids ranged in ages from fourteen to eight, and our son with autism was experiencing a range of new behaviors. In the midst of it all, Joe and I could not find our footing. More and more, we lashed out at one another – caught in a cycle of outbursts, followed by periods of silence.

In other words, we were stuck.
