My son Jack is diagnosed with autism, severe anxiety, and obsessive compulsive disorder. He is twenty and attends a college program a few hours away from us.
The program has a lot of great support, including an academic team, life skills coaching, and social groups.
I am forever grateful we found such a place, because I have no idea what we would have done for him after high school. In many ways, our home had stopped being a learning environment for him.
But how to begin looking for what seemed like the proverbial needle in a haystack? What was available for students like him – students who may not want a degree necessarily, but a chance to explore life after high school with some independence?
