I have a huge binder in my desk. It’s full of paperwork, notes, highlighted spreadsheets, and college applications.
My son Jack is diagnosed with autism, severe anxiety, and obsessive compulsive disorder. He is nineteen.
In September of 2021, we dropped Jack’s older brother Joseph off at a college in Philadelphia.
As we moved him into the dorm, I watched Jack trace the windowsill, the bedframe, and the desk with his fingertips. For the first time, I could see he was imagining what college really looked like. I could tell he was imagining it for himself, too.
From that moment on, I was determined to give Jack an experience of his own.
But where? How to begin looking for what seemed like the proverbial needle in a haystack? What was available for students like him – students who may not want a degree necessarily, but a chance to explore life after high school with some independence?
